Job Description

Position Overview

As a Board of Directors member, you will play a pivotal role in shaping HIHAO's strategic direction, ensuring accountability, and supporting effective governance. This volunteer position is crucial for overseeing the Executive Team's performance, advising on key organizational decisions, and upholding HIHAO’s mission and values.

Core Responsibilities

The responsibilities are categorized into Governance and Oversight, Financial and Resource Management, Strategic Advisory and Partnership Building, and Human Resources and Staff Development.

1. Governance and Oversight

  • Advise Leadership: Provide strategic counsel to the Chairperson and Executive Team on implementing General Assembly decisions, aligning the organization’s objectives with its mission, and enhancing organizational efficiency and impact.
  • Ensure Accountability: Oversee and monitor the organization’s adherence to ethical, legal, and financial standards, ensuring all activities align with HIHAO's core mission and values.
  • Policy Review and Amendments: Participate in policy development and review, including submitting suggestions for bylaw amendments to the General Assembly.
  • Evaluate and Approve Work Plans: Review and endorse annual work plans and specific project plans, ensuring that they are feasible, sustainable, and impactful.
  • Decision-Making and Conflict Resolution: Address unresolved employee grievances and make key decisions on any matters escalated by the Executive Team.
  • Annual General Assembly Participation: Actively participate in the Annual General Assembly, presenting progress reports, and discussing strategic matters.

2. Financial and Resource Management

  • Budget and Financial Review: Conduct biannual and annual reviews of financial statements, including income and expense statements, to ensure fiscal responsibility and transparency.
  • Oversight of Financial Activities: Monitor and control the organization’s revenues and expenditures, ensuring that funds are utilized in line with HIHAO’s strategic goals.
  • Fundraising Support: Contribute to fundraising strategies and connect the organization with potential funding sources to support its activities and expand its impact.

3. Strategic Advisory and Partnership Building

  • Representation and Relationship Building: Serve as a representative of HIHAO in interactions with other NGOs, Civil Society Organizations, government departments, and donors, fostering partnerships that support HIHAO’s mission.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with key stakeholders to strengthen HIHAO’s presence, reputation, and influence within the humanitarian and development sectors.
  • Promote HIHAO’s Mission: Advocate for HIHAO’s work, building awareness and support for the organization’s mission and objectives among local and international partners.

4. Human Resources and Staff Development

  • Performance Monitoring: Regularly review the Executive Director’s performance, providing feedback and guidance to support effective management and leadership.
  • Ensure Ethical Conduct: Establish and maintain a high standard of ethical conduct across the organization, ensuring that Board members and the Executive Team act in the best interest of HIHAO and its stakeholders.
  • Support Staff Capacity Building: Work collaboratively with the Executive Team to support staff development and capacity-building efforts, ensuring HIHAO has a skilled and motivated workforce.

Job Requirement

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years in senior management or leadership roles within NGOs or the private sector, with a strong understanding of organizational governance.
  • Financial Acumen: Demonstrated experience and knowledge of finance, budgeting, and fiscal oversight.
  • Independence and Impartiality: No direct familial relationship with HIHAO’s Executive Staff or other Board members. No previous business or financial relationship with HIHAO.
  • Languages: Proficiency in Dari/Pashto and English (written and spoken).
  • Commitment to HIHAO’s Mission: Passionate about promoting social cohesion, peace, and sustainable development in Afghanistan.
