About Turquoise Mountain: Turquoise Mountain is a non-profit, non-governmental organization specializing in urban regeneration, business development, and education in traditional arts and architecture. We seek to provide education, skills and livelihoods to Afghan men and women. Since 2006 Turquoise Mountain has cleared 45,000 cubic meters of rubbish from the streets, restored or built 150 historic and community buildings, created a primary school and a clinic, and installed water, electricity, and sanitation through the historic traditional craft neighborhood of Murad Khani in the old city of Kabul. It has created the internationally accredited Institute for Afghan Arts & Architecture, training the next generation of craftsmen and women in woodwork, jewelry and gem cutting, calligraphy and miniature painting, and ceramics. Finally, it has sold over US$15,000,000 of Afghan artisan products internationally.

Job Description

As a Calligraphy teacher, she is fully responsible to teach Calligraphy Subject and manage her own classes based on academic standards, her duties range from the preparation of course work, planning of classes and marking the work handed in. On top of this he will also have to arrange any extracurricular activities and set targets for his pupils. He must report from all his classes related activities to the head of Department. she will teach Islamic Calligraphy techniques based on the current curriculum. The workshop she will run is not necessary to be in the main compound of the institute, she may be asked to carry on the training in the other targeted locations in the city.

Core Responsibilities:

  • teaching Calligraphy Subject according to the available guideline-the seven Islamic scripts (Haft Qalam). 
  • Preparing and delivering lessons to a range of classes.
  • Marking work, giving appropriate feedback, and maintaining records of students’ Progress and development.
  • Teaching theorical/practical classes.
  • Selecting and using a range of different learning resources and equipment.
  • Undertaking pastoral duties and supporting students on an individual basis through academic or personal difficulties.
  • Preparing students for qualifications and external examinations.
  • Participating in departmental meetings and whole school training events.
  • Liaising with other professionals, such as Education senior officer or director of institute.
  • Teaching in the institute workshops as well as other scheduled classes out of TM compounds,
  • Plans lessons in line with targeted objectives to ensure that students learn.
  • Keep up to date with developments in their subject area, new resources, methods and objectives. The instructor liaises and networks with other professionals, parents and careers both informally and formally.
  • Other tasks given by the TM authorities or by line manager. 

Job Requirement

Diploma in calligraphy

- Minimum 3 years of formal calligraphy training and experience

- Proficiency in diverse calligraphic styles and techniques

- Strong teaching and communication skills
