About DAI/AVCL: The Afghanistan Value Chains – Livestock (AVC-Livestock) is a USAID funded program expected to run through June 2023. AVC-Livestock utilizes a market systems approach to strengthen and facilitate key transactions at either end of the farmer in targeted value chains - the commercial vendors of the goods and services that farmers need to grow higher volumes of quality produce, and the processors and traders who purchase farmers’ harvests. AVC-Livestock is a market-driven, private sector-focused program that aims to sustainably strengthen the dairy, poultry, honey, red meat and fiber value chains throughout Afghanistan resulting in increased incomes, employment and productivity throughout targeted value chains. Marhaba Handicraft is a women-led registered business located in Mazar-e Sharif City, Balkh Province. The company has multiple weaving centers in Khair Abad, Sad Jadia areas of Mazar city processing and producing Afghan Carpets. This project partner business currently uses old designs that does not meet the market demand limiting the firm’s ability to expand its business thorugh increase in sales and income. Therefore, the company has requested AVC-Livestock Project to provide them an advanced eDesign Carpet Software and further hire a carpet designer to train firm's technical staff on the proper usage of mentioned software creating modern carpet designs. eDesign Carpet Software is a software program designed specifically for the handmade rugsto that improve efficiencies and accuracy, decrease wastage, and improve the ability of carpet designers to produce more customized desinges of rugs and carpets. This software enables to generate more complex designs with best quality, better estimation of materials and reduces graphing time. Job Description

Purpose/ Objectives of the assignment:

The consultant will deliver technical support and carpet designing trainings to Marhaba Handicraft company aimed to improve their employees’ technical knowledge and skills ability of advanced carpet designing and proper usage of the carpet E-designing software.

Tasks

Tasks include, but are not limited to, the following:

Conduct a quick assessment of the company’s carpet designing process lines, facilities, employee knowledge in carpet designing, and at the end of provide recommendations for improvements.
Based on the assessment, draft a capacity building plan, develop training materials and conduct trainings to improve staff knowledge and skills capacity on carpet designing, proper handling, storage, and transportation of the final product to the market ensuring that the product is cost competitive and high-quality.
Conduct training on carpet designing software called “eDesign or Galaincha”.
Deliver theoretical and practical trainings on Chobi Rang design, Khuja Roshani design and Yousofi design of carpets.
Maintain records of investigations, inspections, and research results in order to prepare reports and correspondence.
Provide weekly updates on work progress to AVC-Livestock  
Conduct pre- and post-tests to ensure the training was effective and staffs have learned to use new designing tools and software
Deliver final presentation to the AVC-Livestock technical team on assignment achievements.
Other duties as assigned by the COP or designee.

Deliverables

Required Delivery Date

Conduct assessment of the company and make the assessment report

First two days of the assignment

Develop a comprehensive carpet designing capacity building plan based on the initial assessment and develop capacity building tools.

Day 3 of the assignment

 

Train Marhaba Handicraft company staffs on proper use of the E-designing software

By the end of the assignment

A detailed final report of assignment including lessons learned and recommendations.

End of the assignment  

Reporting

The carpet designing trainer will report to AVC-Livestock Chief of Party or designee

Job Requirement

Baccalaureate with at least three years of relevant work experience in carpet sectors, a minimum of two years of relevant experience in carpet designing and carpet weaving, preferably in Afghani designs like Chobi Rang, Khuja Roshani and Yousofi designs
Familiar with carpet E-designer software
High computer knowledges of MS Office Packages and all required programs
Strong writing, communication and negotiating skills
Proficiency in Dari, Pashtu and English is required

Mazar-e-Sharif, Balkh-Afghanistan 

Confidentiality

All data collected during this assignment will become the property of AVC-Livestock and will not be shared with the third parties without the express permission of AVC-Livestock.

Payment Method:

The STTA will receive payment at once after all the deliverables are completed and approved by the AVC-Livestock project.
