NCA Afghanistan is currently working on Climate Resilient WASH, Climate Smart Economic Empowerment, Humanitarian Response, Learning and Social Development, Civil Society capacity building and numerous UNDP-funded projects. NCA is seeking a competent and highly motivated Social Cohesion Officer with extensive experience in social cohesion and local peace building activities to join our team. This post will support the implementation of social cohesion activities of UNDP funded project called Promoting Ecosystem-based Adaptation & Resilient Livelihoods (PEARL) and Rebuilding Local Economies and Community-Based Horticulture (REACH) projects. The post holder is based in Kabul City and will travel to project sites regularly.

Job Description

The main tasks and responsibilities for this position:

  • Work with the NCA’s implementing partner to ensure that the organisational management capacity of local Shuras is enhanced through conducting relevant training.
  • Work with the partners to ensure that the implementation plan for capacity building of local shuras is prepared and implemented in a contextually-sensitive manner.
  • Work on developing relevant training materials to build local Shuras’ capacity on relevant themes.
  • Work with the M&E team to develop local Shuras capacity building and training tracking system so that the information on the training and other details are regularly updated in the monitoring system.
  • Provide regular and constantly required updates as and when requested on the progress, status and other issues pertaining to local Shuras’ capacity building.
  • Work with the relevant partners to ensure that data and information on the capacity building of local shuras are updated and entered the tracking system.
  • Provide relevant guidance and advice to the trainers, community mobilisers and pertinent other stakeholders engaged in building the capacity of local Shuras.
  • Document success stories, photos, and other evidence-based information and feature them through NCA’s internal portals and platforms, including Yammer Facilitate planning workshops and assist local Shura in documenting their local development plans.
  • Prepare guidelines and templates for local development plans and ensure that local Shuras effectively use those templates.
  • Provide supervision and technical support to implementing partners to ensure that they effectively implement social cohesion activities.
  • Prepare success stories reflecting achievements and impact with regard to the implementation of training and local development plans etc.
  • Review and provide feedback to Implementing Partners on monthly and quarterly reports.
  • Translate some documents, including training materials, manuals and other project-related documents, into English and local languages
  • Preparing training materials on relevant social cohesion topics such as mediation, conflict resolution, social harmony and coexistence
  • Provide technical support to implementing partners, ensuring that the NCA project and its activities are implemented in conflict sensitive manner adhering to the principle of “Do No Harm” in the design and implementation stage
  • Support the implementing partners to conduct a quick mapping of religious actors in the targeted districts
  • Any other activities and tasked as deemed essential and relevant to the assignment

Job Requirement

  • Bachelor’s degree in conflict resolution, Islamic studies, sociology or any other relevant social science
  • A minimum of five (5) years of previous experience in the areas of social cohesion, community-based conflict resolutions, community development, capacity building
  • Can effectively communicate in English and the local languages.
  • Must be willing to travel to project areas
  • Strong working knowledge of word processing software
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
