About Roots of Peace: Roots of Peace is a humanitarian organization whose mission is to rid the world of landmines and other remnants of war by transforming toxic minefields into thriving farmland and communities, through a focus on sustainable, organic farming practices. Roots of Peace is implementing the 3-year, USAID-funded Agriculture Marketing Program. The Agriculture Marketing Program (AMP) builds on the successes of Roots of Peace’s 10-year Commercial Horticulture & Agriculture Marketing Program (CHAMP), and aims over the 3-year period of implementation to increase export volumes and values, introduce new agricultural products to the market, diversify export markets and increase value-added processing. The increased exports will create additional demand for agricultural products that will drive job growth in rural areas. Key objectives/targets include increases in exports by US$450 million, domestics sales by US$50 million and jobs by 4,500. Activities will include: researching new market opportunities for Afghan products; operating trade offices in key markets; organizing or participating in international B2B events, trade missions and trade shows; organizing promotional activities in key markets; providing incentives for businesses exporting new products or to new markets; training in new markets, food safety, access to finance, etc.; facilitating access to trade credit; and mitigating trade impediments. AMP works primarily with private sector agribusinesses, but also engages the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL), the Afghan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI), the Export Promotion Agency of Afghanistan (EPAA) and other USAID-funded agricultural programs including (AVC-Crops, AVC-Livestock, RADP East and PVC-West). Specific attention is given to support the participation of women and youth in AMP activities.

Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Agribusiness Specialist will work under the overall supervision of Senior Agribusiness Specialist. He will contribute to enhance the capacity of the Market Linkage Officers, agribusinesses, and farmers to introduce quality inputs improved technologies and production practices to increase production and improve quality in terms of pre- and post-harvest, marketing and logistics best practices.

S/he will ensure that all activities are undertaken in compliance with USAID and ROP regulations, policies and procedures, and AMP objectives. S/he will undertake both administrative and technical tasks.

Tasks to Support Role:

  1. Organize and facilitate training of the agribusinesses, and farmers groups both on technical as well as extension methodology and extension management related the introduction of staple food crops, off-season production as well as exploring opportunities and models for contract farming.
  2. Pre harvest product handling: teach agribusinesses and farmers on land preparation, farm layout, planting, nutrition management, pruning, production techniques for yield increase and quality improvement.  
  3. Integrated Pest and Diseases Management (IPM) Techniques
  4. Surface irrigation; explain the concept use and benefits of the drip irrigation, and sprinkle system and its difference with other conventional irrigation systems like flood etc.
  5. Harvest and post- harvest product handling; train Agribusinesses and Farmer Groups on harvest and post-harvest handling and processes to reduce the losses in all mentioned stages.
  6. Storage and transportation techniques; train horticulture extension officer on the pre-cooling, good handling of storage and good transportation practices to increase shelf life of the products.
  7. Good Agricultural Practices for Staple vegetable crops such as Potatoes, Onions, and Tomatoes.
  8. Good Management Practices: train agribusinesses and farmers and promote on offseason vegetable production opportunities.
  9. Good Management Practices: train agribusinesses, and farmers, promoting staple crop production opportunities.
  10. Market specification; train Agribusinesses and farmer groups on market maturities and other requirements.


ADMINISTRATIVE

  1. Provide inputs (text and photos) for AMP monthly and quarterly reports.
  2. Provide database and information to the AMP M&E personnel, as required.

Job Requirement

Education:

  1. University degree in Agriculture especially in Horticulture is desired.
  2. Good knowledge of Management, FFS approach, practical horticultural concepts, analyses, report writing, evaluations, assessment and presentation.

 

Work Experience:

  1. Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible working experience in the field of Agriculture, horticulture project implementation,understanding extension methodology management and/or project management experience preferably in an international development setting.

 

Skills:

  1. Must have demonstrated understanding of coordination, Supervision and project management skills with diverse team and large flow of information and activities.
  2. Must be able to work independently and prioritize, show initiative experience in an NGO setting.
  3. Ability and flexibility to work under stress and understanding to address sensitive social and/or political issues.
  4. Fluency in English language both spoken and written, in addition to local languages Dari and Pashto
  5. Demonstrated planning, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  6. Ability to set priorities and manage time effectively.
  7. Ability to think and communicate clearly with others, motivate and lead people.
  8. Advance computer skills specially in Micro soft Office
  9. Strong analytical and communication, report writing and presentation skills 

Supervisory responsibility:

Direct supervision responsibility for Agribusiness specialists and officers as well as delivering training with a high degree of quality to the target farmers.
