Job Description
Position Objective and Summary;
The Business Strengthening Specialist will support businesses involved in high-value agriculture value chains by providing tailored business advice and facilitating strategic expansion plans. This role is crucial for fostering sustainable business growth and promoting gender-inclusive practices.
The Business Strengthening Specialist will help businesses develop and implement expansion plans, facilitate access to capital, and deliver targeted training programs. This role will also involve creating marketing materials and ensuring compliance with relevant quality certifications.
S/he will ensure that all activities are undertaken in compliance with donor’s and ROP regulations, policies, and procedures, and project objectives. S/he will undertake both administrative and technical tasks.
Specific Tasks;
- Support businesses involved in high-value agriculture value chains to develop and implement strategic expansion plans.
- Provide tailored business advice, including market analysis, financial modeling, and business process analysis.
- Facilitate access to capital by liaising with potential investors and financial institutions.
- Develop and deliver targeted training programs focused on inclusive leadership, diversity, and gender-sensitive management practices. Examples include financial management, business planning, market analysis, and quality standards.
- Establish structured mentorship and apprenticeship programs for women entrepreneurs.
- Prepare feasibility studies, market data, and reports to aid decision-making for business development.
- Assist in establishing business relations with domestic and overseas buyers and expanding current business relations.
- Help program client firms achieve certification from international institutions.
- Introduce new agricultural technologies for value addition in Afghan produce.
- Promote inclusive business practices within the project and among stakeholders.
- Assist client firm with the development of marketing materials, including brochures, product descriptions, and promotional content.
- Assist informal entrepreneurs in navigating the process of business registration, obtaining necessary licenses and permits, and scaling their operations to comply with Afghan regulatory requirements.
- Develop business plans tailored to different types of businesses, ranging from nascent, small entrepreneurial activities to more established businesses.
- Prepare and submit reports, including field trip, monthly, quarterly, annual and any other reports.
- Travel throughout program area in the country when required.
- Assist in all other operational and administrative tasks as required by the Program Management team.
Administrative Tasks;
- Prepare inputs (text and photos) for monthly and quarterly reports.
- Provide data and information to the ROP M&E personnel, as required.
- Any other tasks of a similar nature as requested by the Supervisor.
Job Requirement
Ideal Experience/Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Business Administration, Economics, or a related field.
- At least 10 years of experience in business development, preferably in agricultural value chains.
- Experience with UN, World Bank, USG or other donor-funded projects engaged in export promotion activities.
- Strong understanding of financial modeling, market analysis, and business planning.
- Experience in training and mentorship program development.
- Knowledge of relevant quality certifications and standards.
- Proficiency in MS Office and other relevant software.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Strong business acumen; ability to understand challenges faced by Afghan traders and exporters and devise private-sector result-oriented solutions.
- Motivation, flexibility and capacity to work under pressure and short deadlines, and strong sense of personal initiative.
- Fluency in English, and Pashto and/or Dari.
