About Turquoise Mountain: Turquoise Mountain is a non-profit, non-governmental organization specializing in urban regeneration, business development, and education in traditional arts and architecture. We seek to provide education, skills and livelihoods to Afghan men and women. Since 2006 Turquoise Mountain has cleared 36,000 cubic meters of rubbish from the streets, restored or built 150 historic and community buildings, created a primary school and a clinic, and installed water, electricity, and sanitation through the historic traditional craft neighborhood of Murad Khani in the old city of Kabul. It has created the internationally accredited Institute for Afghan Arts & Architecture, training the next generation of craftsmen and women in woodwork, jewelry and gem cutting, calligraphy and miniature painting, and ceramics. Finally, it has sold over US$15,000,000 of Afghan artisan products internationally.
Job Description
Context
Turquoise Mountain is working on a four-year program with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). This program aims to create 5,000 jobs in the carpet and jewelry value-chains in Afghanistan, and facilitate the sale of 20,000,000 worth of Afghan carpet and jewelry products to international markets. The program will build the technical capacity of those active in both value-chains, improve working conditions and ensure environmental standards, raise awareness about production abilities in Afghanistan, improve order fulfilment, and increase exports of higher-margin carpet and jewelry products, thereby increasing income-generating opportunities for thousands of Afghans.
Responsibilities:
- Provide business mentoring and on the job training support to selected Afghan craft entrepreneurs and businesses to ensure business processes and order fulfilment meet the standard of the international market. This includes: identifying capacity building needs and conducting need assessments; producing action plans to address the identified needs; providing support in preparing, producing and finalizing business plans, and providing practical training and coaching in all topics related to business management (accounting, sales and marketing, financing, planning), order fulfillment, and logistics and exports.
- Support enterprises to access finance by identifying financing needs as well as the most appropriate financing mechanisms.
- Identify shipping companies and airlines to promote air freight options and provide advice to enterprises on export procedures and shipping.
- Support TM on outreach and research initiatives and management of project activities.
- Support enterprises in market research and linkage activities.
- Record and collect monthly monitoring and evaluation data as well as document compelling stories and case studies.
- Prepare report on activities for M&E purposes.
- Support Turquoise Mountain’s monitoring and evaluation team to measure project impact of supported businesses.
- Laise and coordinate with relevant government departments on project activities.
- Lead coordination with fair-trade partner Label STEP to improve conditions for weavers and monitor weaver wages including by gathering and analyzing data and coordinating field activities.
Job Requirement
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Business Management or Commerce or other relevant degree.
- At least 3 years of relevant experience in providing business mentoring support and/or training in Afghanistan. Experience in the carpet and jewelry value-chains specifically is an asset.
- Knowledge of computer skills such as MS office is required.
- Fluency in English and Afghan local languages.
- Prepared to be based in Mazar Sharif and travel domestically to applicable areas of service (Jawzjan, Faryab, Kabul).
