Job Description
Assist the Political Affairs Officer and the Head of Field Office in work related to the mission’s mandate particularly on engagement with women counterparts with regard to political, peace and security related development in the province and within the region, specifically:
Under the direct supervision of the Head of Field Office or Political Affairs Officer; the Assistant Political Affairs Officer will be responsible to:
- Maintain regular contacts at working level with various offices of the de facto provincial and district government, government’s security institutions, UN Agencies, INGOs, NGOs, local representatives of political parties, civil societies including local tribal elders and religious leaders.
- Participate fully in assigned operational activities related to Afghan led peace and reintegration process; receives and analyzes information from de facto provincial and district authorities, security institutions, media, civil societies including women’s groups; and maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues, gender mainstreaming, status of reintegrees, security sector development and security incidents that affect political dynamics, local peace and stability.
- Assist senior officers in arranging meetings with interlocutors of UNAMA Field Office and organizes political outreach activities as well as drafts briefing notes, talking points, background papers, meeting notes, political profiles, political situation reports, thematic reports, and flash reports.
- Provide UNAMA’s good office functions to de facto local authorities in conflict prevention, conflict resolution and security sector development.
- Develop and maintain relations with de facto government officials and civil societies.
- Monitor and report political, security, socio-economic and other politically relevant development in Herat province as well as updates with political and security information of adjacent provinces in the Western Region, namely Badghis, Ghor and Farah provinces
- Create database, maintains digital records and regularly update the office SharePoint with meeting notes, reports, provincial profile, contact lists and major correspondences.
- Uploads daily reports into SAGE database.
- Performs other related duties as required.

Languages:
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Fluency in written and oral Dari is required. Fluency in oral and written Pashto is desirable.
