Job Description

ROLE PURPOSE:

Save the Children strives to give children in Afghanistan the chance to be heard and to tell their stories. On the issues that matter to children, we want to shape policies, influence public opinion, and raise funds to improve children’s lives. Communications and media are important platforms for achieving this.

As a member of the Advocacy, Campaigns, Communications, and Media (ACCM) team, the Content and Communications Officer will collect compelling, high-quality photographs, videos, and case studies that highlight the needs of Afghan children and Save the Children’s work, while ensuring all communications activities follow our safeguarding guidelines and policies. They will work closely with the rest of the ACCM to collect content to support global fundraising, campaigns, and media work.

This role will involve frequent travel to Save the Children’s programs across the country.

In the event of a major humanitarian emergency, the post holder may be expected to travel to the affected area at short notice and to work outside the normal role profile, including extended working hours where necessary.

SCOPE OF ROLE:

Reports to: Media, Content & External Relations Manager

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • Lead in productively, identifying and collecting case studies and success stories (including photo and video content) from programs across nine provinces by building close relations with teams across the organization and staying abreast of all activities.
  • Support in documenting, managing, and sharing lessons learned, success stories, and case studies for a range of internal and external stakeholder audiences, ensuring messages achieve maximum impact and are consistent with Save the Children’s brand.
  • Collect photos, videos, and case studies to support our media work, following briefs provided by the Head of Media and global media colleagues.
  • Develop messaging and write and edit content for a range of purposes.
  • Lead on ensuring all field staff is following our safeguarding guidelines and policies when collecting content and stories.
  • Edit photos and videos according to to Save the Children branding policies.
  • Upload content to our asset library (Content Hub), ensuring all content and metadata adhere to our global Content Hub guidelines.

Job Requirement

QUALIFICATIONS 

Essential:

  • Professional level photographer/videographer.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience working professionally in Afghanistan as a photographer, photojournalist, or videographer. Experience working with NGOs is highly desired.  
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, photography, media, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Must have excellent communication skills with a high level of written and spoken English and at least Pashtu or Dari.
  • A good news sense, with an eye for a compelling story.
  • Experience writing for a variety of different audiences.
  • Ability to travel to the field at least 50% of the time. Female staff members are supported to bring a Marham if necessary.
  • Politically and culturally sensitive with qualities of patience, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Commitment to and understanding of Save the Children Afghanistan’s aims, values, and principles.
  • Good conceptual and analytical thinking, and good attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational skills with experience managing competing priorities to meet tight deadlines.

Desirable:

  • Uzbek language skills.
  • Knowledge and experience in editing videos with Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro.
  • Experience using an asset management database.
  • Experience working with I/NGOs, government, and/or media.
  • Experience writing case studies and/or news stories.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • Experience in producing newsletters, scripts, documentaries, and photos;
  • Experience in establishing mechanisms and sustaining effective communication with the Country Office and provincial teams;
  • Experience in capturing photo and video content for pitching to media
