Job Description
Your role
The Education in Emergencies Advisor is responsible for supporting the strategic direction for War Child UK’s education related work in Afghanistan in line with the global and country strategy. The Advisor provides hands-on support to develop, position and implement education programmes in within the emergency response. The focus is on ensuring that teams and partners have the skills and capacity to meet technical quality standards in our emergency education work, and that the organisation is able to achieve and evidence outcomes and impact in our work based on sound technical design.
The Advisor plays a crucial role in ensuring that War Chid is active and well represented on external coordination fora, and in initiatives to develop WCUK's leadership and profile globally. Representation on NGO, UN and donor networks is an important feature of the role, ensuring that War Child is effectively networked across the sector, and that our programmes learn from the experience of others. The Advisor will also collaborate with teams to develop strategies and proposals for Afghanistan, providing essential technical expertise in programme design and assuring that our interventions meet sector quality standards.
Your responsibilities:
- Strengthen War Child Afghanistan’s education in emergencies (EiE)programming, supporting rights-based, quality education interventions for girls and boys across a range of humanitarian settings.
- Develop the thought leadership in EiE n collaboration with colleagues as part of alliances and committees, including initiating new approaches and research directions for our work.
- Represent War Child UK at technical, coordination and donor meetings at country level and ensure strong coordination with other War Child agencies.
- Identify and support relevant partnerships with donors, humanitarian agencies, academic institutions and private sector to build-up the profile and reputation and War Child’s education work in Afghanistan.
- With the Programme Funding Team, scan the sector for relevant funding opportunities.
- Provide capacity building support to staff members on War Child EiE priority areas including early years care and development, accelerated learning, school reconstruction, teacher training, curriculum development.
- Lead on the design of EiE needs assessments and develop related education strategies and responses.
- Travel to programme areas to assist in education programme start-up, rapid needs assessment, monitoring and support.
- Support the recruitment of new education staff, consultants or other external support, in coordination with human resources.
- Develop and pilot-test innovative accountability feedback mechanisms.
- Establish communities of practice, discussions fora and learning events to support cross-team learning.
- Contribute to creating a culture committed to the safeguarding of children and adults and compliant to WCUK’s Child Safeguarding and Adults at Risk Policies.

Job Requirement
- Experienced in designing, supporting, monitoring and evaluating education programmes in complex emergencies and/or post conflict situations.
- In possession of an excellent track-record in programming in education areas.
- Able to demonstrate coordination, networking and relationship building skills with key partners including government, donors, INGOs, national and local organizations, and UN agencies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate complex information in an effective way.
- Skilled in qualitative and quantitative research methods report-writing, documentation, and dissemination of learning in Education in emergency are
- Significantly experienced in education proposal development, and the ability to effectively mainstream education within psychosocial support, child protection, food security and livelihoods.
- Able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, positive and professional attitude, ability to lead and work well in a culturally diverse team setting and with multiple partners. Strengths include listening, empathy, flexibility, and creativity. Fluent in English and Dari / Pashto.
