Job Description
The role holder will provide obstetrical care to pregnant women and their babies before, during, and after delivery according to the INTERSOS sexual reproductive health protocols and universal IPC standards to prevent and reduce the risk of any complications under the supervision of a medical doctor. The midwife would also facilitate and ensure the safe referral of patients requiring specialized care.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Follow INTERSOS guidelines and protocols in management for all SRH activities.
- Provide continuous and correct antenatal care for pregnant women by taking the full history of the patients.
- Clear and correct handover of patients, including special cases between shifts in the maternity to ensure the continuity of management.
- Work and collaborate with the supervisor (facility manager or designated medical doctor) to monitor and control the patient flow to organize the maternity and SRH properly.
- Prompt decision and accurate management for emergencies and complicated obstetric cases in collaboration with the supervisor and the obstetrician/attending medical doctor.
- Ensure the application of IPC rules, including standard precautions, waste segregation, sterilization, patient hygiene, and ward cleanliness.
- According to INTERSOS protocols in force, conduct normal deliveries independently, manage obstetric emergencies, identify cases needing referral and facilitate the timely referral, and clean up the newborn. Execute and register first neonatal medical acts (cutting and cleaning the umbilical cord, vaccination, etc.), detecting possible anomalies/infections of the newborn, and reporting them to the doctor.
- Provide appropriate follow-up for the post-partum patients and their babies in the maternity. Ensure they are advised on the importance of PNC visits (at least two visits), hygiene, baby care, exclusive breastfeeding, vaccination, family planning, and counseling against harmful traditional practices.
- Prompt and accurate documentation of care in all patient files and registers.
- Identify patients at risk and need mental health management, like missed abortion, IUFD, and postpartum psychosis.
- Promptly reporting protection and any other incidences to the supervisor or the manager.
- Responsible for Care of biomed items.
- Collaborate with the medical doctor and/or nurse in the management of Sexual Violence cases
- Ensure patients’ right to privacy and confidentiality is respected.
- Ensure administrative procedures of admissions.
- Verify that patients are properly informed and receive the documents required (birth certificate, vaccination card, etc.)
- Participate in the organization of the ward in collaboration with other midwives and the maternity ward supervisor. Ensure transfer of relevant information to the next shift team (especially identifying risk cases)
- To ensure successful interventions, supervise the use of drugs, facilities, and obstetric material to ensure sufficiency in accordance with the number of patients and prescriptions. Regularly update stock levels and ensure all medical commodities are kept under appropriate conditions and above minimum safety points.
- Assessment of high-risk pregnancies and post-natal mothers for referral from BHCS to BEmONC or from BEmONC facilities to CEmONC facilities as per INTERSOS Guidelines and Policies
- Liaise with other healthcare providers and social care professionals to ensure continuity of care.
- Actively participate in training and supervision of junior colleagues (sub-ordinate staff)
- Follow the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient.
- Accompany complicated obstetric and gynecological cases being referred to BEmONC Or CEmONC Health facilities for advanced/specialized care. Providing appropriate monitoring, stabilization and support throughout the referral until they are handed over to receiving center.
- Taking on any other role-related tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
Note: Sexual and Reproductive health activities: include: antenatal and postnatal care, family planning, obstetrical care (BEmONC), neonatal and comprehensive abortion care, management of victims of sexual violence, female genital mutilation, reproductive tract infections and Fistula care. Note: 2. BEmONC = basic emergency obstetric and neonatal care = Administration of antibiotics, oxytocin, anticonvulsants, manual removal of the placenta, removal of retained products following abortion, assisted vaginal delivery, preferably with vacuum extractor and newborn care including neonatal resuscitation.
Job Requirement
- A diploma or bachelor’s degree in midwifery studies from a recognized school is required.
- At least two years of relevant work experience as a midwife in a busy maternity working experience with INGOs is an asset.
- Training in BEmONC and other SRH training is preferable.
- Training in BLS and ACLS.
- Pashto and Dari speaking and writing skills are required; English is highly recommended.
- Diplomacy, good communication and interpersonal skills
- Multi-cultural flexibility, team player, open-minded
- Comply with all relevant INTERSOS policies and procedures.
- Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to effectively present information and respond appropriately to questions from senior managers.
- Ability and willingness to travel and work overnight at service delivery points.
- Is aware of INTERSOS objectives and activities in general and the working context.
- Participates actively in meetings and training.
- Is constantly aware of INTERSOS security rules and the situation in the field.
- Translates documents and/or interprets conversation when necessary.
- Should have a Maharam during patient transfers between health facilities as required by the local authorities
