Job Description

The Hydro Power Engineer will be responsible for the design, development, and optimization of hydroelectric power generation systems. This role will involve working on all aspects of hydropower project lifecycle, from feasibility studies and conceptual design to construction oversight and operational support:

  • Design and development of hydroelectric power generation systems
  • Designing civil structures like dams, intake structures, and tailraces
  • Designing Solar system projects and agricultural water canals
  • Overseeing the construction and installation of new hydropower projects
  • Coordinating with contractors, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders
  • Ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and to specifications
  • Monitoring the performance and efficiency of existing projects
  • Troubleshooting and diagnosing issues with turbines, generators, and other components
  • Scheduling and overseeing maintenance and repair work
  • Optimizing operations to maximize energy generation
  • Environmental and regulatory compliance:
  • Assessing the environmental impact of hydropower projects
  • Ensuring adherence to regulations and permit requirements
  • Developing mitigation strategies for environmental concerns
  • Investigating new technologies and methods to improve hydropower efficiency
  • Conducting feasibility studies for potential hydroelectric sites
  • Analyzing data and developing predictive models for hydropower projects
  • Coordinating with interdisciplinary teams of engineers, technicians, and operators
  • Presenting technical findings and recommendations to stakeholders
  • Providing technical support and training to hydropower plant personnel

Job Requirement

Education and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
  • Preferred: Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Hydraulic Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, or Power Systems Engineering
  • Minimum 3-5 years of relevant experience in the hydropower industry

Technical Skills and Knowledge:

  • Extensive knowledge of hydroelectric power generation systems, including turbine and generator technologies, civil structures (dams, intake systems, etc.), and electrical power systems
  • Proficiency in hydraulic and hydrological modeling, using software such as HEC-RAS, MIKE, or Ansys
  • Expertise in structural analysis and design of hydropower infrastructure, including the use of FEA software
  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering principles, including power generation, transmission, and grid integration
  • Familiarity with control systems, SCADA, and instrumentation used in hydropower plants
  • Ability to interpret and apply relevant industry standards, codes, and regulations (e.g., IEC, IEEE, ASME, FERC)
  • Experience in performing techno-economic feasibility studies and cost-benefit analysis for hydropower projects

Project Management and Planning:

  • Proficient in project planning, scheduling, and resource allocation
  • Ability to develop and monitor project budgets, timelines, and quality control measures
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills to address technical challenges and mitigate risks

Environmental and Regulatory Compliance:

  • Knowledge of environmental impact assessments and mitigation strategies for hydropower projects
  • Understanding of relevant environmental regulations and permitting requirements (e.g., NEPA, CWA, ESA)
  • Experience in coordinating with regulatory agencies and stakeholders to ensure compliance

Communication and Collaboration:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to present technical information to diverse audiences
  • Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams, including civil, electrical, and mechanical engineers, as well as operations and maintenance personnel
  • Experience in providing technical support and training to hydropower plant operators and maintenance staff
  • Certification in Hydropower Plant Optimization, Maintenance, or Safety (e.g., ASME, ASDSO)
