Job Description
Summary of Key Functions:
The Horticulture Officer will work under the direct supervision of horticulture specialist and overall supervision of CBARD Project manager and is responsible for the training and technology transfer to the project Extension Agents and the beneficiary farmers in order to improve the capacity of the High value crops farmers to raise their incomes through effective delivery of the needed technical services. Detailed responsibilities of the Horticulture Officer are as under
- Assist and train farmers on best practices regarding the use, maintenance, and management of technologies on the cultivation of high value crops.
- Assess the farmers' current practices and provide guidance on how to address any issues that may limit productivity.
- Analyze the current situation of High Value Crops production in the province and recommend different varieties of high value crops for cultivation.
- Provide support to selected entrepreneurs on cultivation techniques of high value crops e.g. planting, managing, irrigation, fertilization, harvesting and storage of high value crops.
- Provide support to selected entrepreneurs on proper pests, diseases and insects management and use of various chemicals if required.
- Provide training to the farmers on the efficient and effective use of irrigation water and introduce them the most efficient irrigation systems.
- Advice high value crops farmers on better use of fertilizer, water and other resources required for cultivation of the crops.
- Conduct field surveys and collect data required for designing the project interventions with relevant teams to include the horticulture activities and consideration in both watershed and irrigation scheme investment.
- Advice and take active part with regards to beneficiary selection, site selection, land preparation and other activities for the plantation.
- Coordinate closely with suppliers of Farms Support package materials during the distribution phase of the project.
- Develop business case and modules for Marketing Training for business development.
- Maintain professional relationships with team members, promote a strong spirit amongst the team and provide oversight and guidance to enable staff to successfully perform in their roles.
- Establish relationships with different stakeholders within and outside of the identified value chains to improve the operations of businesses and entrepreneurs.
Key relations:
Internal: Project manager, Project supervisor, livelihood officer, Program Quality Unit, project beneficiaries, government related departments, NGOs (local and national), forums, CARE internal departments.
External: Government relevant counterparts, Microfinance Associations, Private Sectors, Project’s Stakeholders, target communities and business institutions.
Duty Locations:
Balkh sub office with regular visits to targeted districts in Balkh.

Job Requirement
Core Competencies:
Excellent planning, conceptual, entrepreneur, organizing, analytical, networking and negotiation skills, Problem-solving, decision-making and delegation skills strong leadership, good verbal and written communication skills in English, Dari and Pashtu, capacity to adapt to a changing environment and working under tight deadlines.
Skills and Experience:
Excellent computer skills especially in Word and Excel.
Excellent interpersonal and communication, supervisory and coaching skill
Education:
University degree in Agriculture discipline, specialization in horticulture or related subjects.
master’s degree in above discipline will be given preference.
Work Experience:
Minimum 3 years of working experience in related field.
