About Jhpiego: Urban Health Initiative The USAID funded Urban Health Initiative (UHI) Program’s goal is to improve health outcomes of people living in urban areas, particularly focusing on the health of women and children and other vulnerable populations. Interventions aim to increase demand, access and quality of health services. Lead by Jhpiego and implemented by a dynamic consortium of organizations, UHI is implemented in five cities in Afghanistan – Kabul, Herat, Mazar‐e‐Sharif, Jalalabad and Kandahar.

Job Description

Overview:
The Communications Manager is responsible for reflecting the project’s activities and effectives in
Afghanistan through community driven success stories and other forms of media products. S/he will
work with the project’s field staff for collecting materials and assists the head of Communications
department with leading the entire department.

Responsibilities
01‐ Management Responsibilities:
 Manage and supervise the communication team.
 Ensure that all the project products comply with USAID and Jhpiego branding and marking policy,
review, edits and finalizing them.
 Coordination with procurement and logistic teams to manage the development of printing
materials and the technical specifications for printing companies.
 Coordination with project technical team to review the photos, stories, videos and etc.
 Work closely with project implementing partners to define and implement communication
priorities and activities.
 Ensure the Jhpiego ‐ GECO 12 communications standards, policies and processes are carried out
and the relevant communication products are shared with Jhpiego headquarter office.
 Strengthening the capacity of project staff in collecting, compelling, impact‐driven stories and
photos that amplify the USAID and Jhpiego brand.

Working with Headquarter and Asia regional communication teams to make sure the program
work is appropriately reflected through project photos and stories.
02‐ Technical Responsibilities:
A: Photos submission:
• Produce high quality photos that showcase the program impact and success.
• Produce photos with captions for publication in social media (Twitter) on weekly base.
• Support the team with editing photos, and exporting the photos to usable file types
in multimedia production.

B: Reports formatting and designing:
• Formatting the quarterly and annual reports of the project that comply with USAID and
Jhpiego branding and marking policies.
• Developing the project communication products such as banners, presentations, training
manuals, posters and etc.
C: Translation of documents (English, Dari and Pashto):
 Translate project materials (Guidelines, forms, flip charts, presentations and etc) from
English into local languages (Dari and Pashtu) and vice versa.
 Proofread, edit and layout all translated documents to ensure they accurately reflect the
original documents

D: Video Clips and interviews:
• Identifies beneficiary‐oriented stories in the field for video interview and producing
short video clips
• Drafts video scripts, shoots and edits videos
• Shoots in‐house/outdoor video including interviews and/or other types of video footage
• Coordinates field travels with the project’s provincial managers for media production of
the project’s effectiveness in communities.
E: Collecting of Success Stories:
• Collects potential success stories from provinces and works closely with the project’s
field staff for developing the stories that showcase program impact.
• Developing the photo stories for donors and counterparts
• Finalizes the success stories submitted from provinces into USAID pre‐built format
and submits to the Deputy Country Director.

Job Requirement

Required Qualifications:
• At least bachelor degree in journalism, communications or relevant field
• High proficiency skills in English, verbally and in writing
• Proficient technical skills in using different types of digital cameras, camcorders
and DSLRs
• Proficient knowledge of sound recording techniques and studio lighting – recording
• High knowledge of Adobe creative suite software such as Adobe Photoshop

Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects and Adobe Audition
•    Proficient skills in using Microsoft Word, Microsoft Publisher and Microsoft Excel
•    Knowledge of USAID branding and Marking Guidelines
•    Experience with USAID projects preferred

Travel:

•    Willingness to travel in‐country required. Travel time may be up to 25%.
