Job Description
Job Purpose
Responsible for providing high-quality midwifery care through modelling, education, observation, crisis intervention,
problem-solving, clear communication, and teamwork in the hospital while ensuring compliance with midwifery
standards and MLMCC procedures.

Key Accountabilities
Midwives offer guidance, care, and assistance for women and their partners and families before, during, and after
childbirth. They assist women in making their own decisions about the care and services they receive. Additionally,
they provide care for newborns, offer health education, and provide parenting support for the first 28 days. Midwives
are directly responsible for the health of both mother and child and only refer to obstetricians in cases of
complications.

Offer respectful maternity care to patients.
Be punctual for day and night shifts.
Participate in the morning report.
End-of-shift midwives must provide a comprehensive report to on-coming midwives regarding the patients
and events during the shift.
Night shift midwives should stay until the end of the morning report.
Stay on duty until the relieving shift arrives and is fully updated.
Sustain accurate and thorough medical records for patients and file them neatly.
Keep the patient board updated and posted with relevant information.
Admit new patients, thoroughly diagnose labor, fill out labor admission forms, and order appropriate lab
screens based on MLMCC guidelines.
Identify high-risk pregnancies and emergency cases, implement resuscitation interventions, and promptly
refer patients to linked hospitals.
Supervise and assist mothers in labor, monitor the fetus' condition, and provide labor support and pain
management according to advanced midwifery care protocols and procedures.
Assess labor progress by checking vitals, conducting pelvic exams, monitoring fetal heart rate,
and recording on the partograph.
Identify major complications and refer the patient to a tertiary hospital.
Conduct normal vaginal deliveries, including starting IVs, delivering the baby using a sterile
technique, managing the third stage with routine IM oxytocin, performing episiotomy (as
needed), suturing lacerations, and documenting on the Partograph and Labour and Delivery
Summary.
Keep clear, detailed records of deliveries in the Birth Register Book.
Disinfect, scrub, wash, pack, and sterilize instruments in the Delivery Set.
Handle complicated vaginal deliveries, such as vacuum extraction and shoulder dystocia during
the second stage of labor.
Provide routine newborn care, including bulb suctioning, drying, assigning APGAR scores,
weighing, measuring length and head circumference, monitoring vital signs, administering Vitamin
K i.m and Tetracycline eye ointment, placing ID band, and clothing the infant.
Offer routine postpartum care, including monitoring vital signs of the mother and baby, tracking
the mother's input and output, initiating and assisting with breastfeeding, and documenting on the
Postpartum Chart.

Provide health education, including fathers when possible, on breastfeeding, warning signs, newborn care,
and family planning during their postpartum stay.
Counsel and educate women, families, and the community on relevant areas of health including hygiene,
family planning, nutrition, warning signs, preparation for childbirth, and parenting. Advise mothers on key
messages for infant and young child feeding (IYCF).
Check stock of supplies and medicines at the beginning of every shift, record needed items, and order
from stock or refer to the Midwife Supervisor.
Adhere to infection prevention policies and procedures in all aspects of the job.
Share knowledge, skills, and expertise with all maternity staff. Encourage the participation of family
members in the birth to support the mother and enhance both mother/baby bonding and family
relationships.
Provide regular feedback to the line manager and report any issues or incidents directly. Participate in
training facilitated by the UHI project/hospital directorate.

Job Requirement
Registered Midwife, Bachelor degree is preferred
Five year experience in similar position desirable
Good communication skill both in writing and oral in Dari/Pashtu essential
Communication skill in English oral and written desirable
Ability to communicate clearly and work well with others in a team environment
