About AKHS-A (Aga Khan Health Service-Afghanistan): Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS) is one of the most comprehensive private, not‐for‐profit health care systems in the developing world with community health programs in large geographical areas in Central and South Asia, as well as in East Africa. The Aga Khan Health Services, Afghanistan (AKHS, A) was established in 2003 as part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN). AKHS, A provides health care services mainly on behalf of the government including the Ministry of Public Health’s of Afghanistan’s Basic Package of Health Services (BPHS) and Essential Package of Hospital Services (EPHS). AKHS, A is unique both in scale and scope, delivering critical health services along the continuum of care, from Community Health Workers (CHWs) to ISO certified hospital facilities. Since 2003 AKHS, A is implementing Healthcare services in Bamyan, Baghlan and Badakhshan provinces. The agency’s scope of work includes the provision of primary and secondary Healthcare, Preventive and curative medical care, Nursing and Midwifery education, Human Resources Development and Hospital Management. The current working modality and role of AKHS, A in Bamyan and Badakhshan provinces as BPHS and EPHS implementer. AKHS, A provides technical support as well as capacity building of health personnel, immunization services, nutrition trainings and the training of Community Health Nurses and Community Health Midwifery. AKHS, A tapped into internal and other donor fundings to continue supplementary and complementary supports to the national health system. Moreover, AKHS, A scale up AKDN innovations, including, expansions of e-Health services, e-learning initiatives, and cross border arrangements. To promote healthy environment, AKHS, A is implementing net zero and greenhouse gas emission.
Job Description
A. Effective management of patients:
- Conduct daily ward rounds for support to MDs, observation, and review of patients.
- Ensure improvements, daily checking of newborn babies and proper supervision in Neonatology unit
- Run specialist clinics on a regular basis.
- Regularly monitor patients’ progress and provide documentation.
- Attend to emergency cases when necessary and be on 24 hrs call.
- Ability to perform fistula surgeries.
- Carry out emergency Obstetric/Gynae procedures.
- Ensure complete daily documentation of patient case notes/files.
- Ensure complete discharge, referral, and feedback procedures for patients.
- Ensure provision of health education for patients and relatives
- Maintain regular contacts with heads of other departments to ensure harmonization of patients’ management.
- Review and strengthen policies and procedures for patients’ health care to formulate best practice guidelines based on EPHS.
- Ensure timely availability of required support services in the process of treating patients, particularly when referred to other specialists.
- Liaise with other consultants on handling specialized cases in provision of patients’ health care.
- Prepare timely and accurate medical reports, audits, and mortality reviews. Responsible for presenting and distributing these reports to appropriate users.
- Ensure medical records activities are effectively implemented.
- Active role in investigation of suspected cervical and breast cancer among women.
B. Ensure optimum staff performance with an emphasis on customer service and delivery of quality patient care.
- Ensure effective management of wards, OPD clinics and other units of relevant clinical departments.
- Observe and comply with environmental health, occupational safety and Infection Prevention measures and regulations.
- Provide necessary teaching and clinical support to community midwifery Students if required.
- Any other duties assigned by Clinical Director
C. Play a role in the growth and sustainability of the institution.
- Create, uphold, and promote a positive hospital image.
- Provide professional guidance to facilitate growth and development of the Doctors and institution.
- Initiate and participate in clinical research activities.
- Participate in clinical governance, medical and clinical audit activities.
- Ensure effective utilization of resources.
D. To provide overall leadership function for the department.
- Motivate, coach and counsel staff.
- Ensure staff has written Job descriptions and objectives.
- Develop staff to enable them to achieve their objectives.
- Ensure participation of all subordinates
- Initiate and assure completion of actions.
- Work with subordinates to establish effective managerial control through delegation and coordination.
- Stimulate achievement and evaluate performance on a regular basis.
- Work effectively with superiors, peers, and subordinates.
- Conduct regular participative meetings.
E. Maintain a favourable organization climate.
- Maintain a warm and friendly relationship with employees, associates, customers, and suppliers.
- Maintain an atmosphere of acceptance and support within the department
- Communicate well, the expectations and results of subordinates.

Job Requirement
Education: Having Post Graduate Diploma in General surgery or Obstetrics and Gynaecology and skill of fistula repair.
Experience: At least Three years practical work in a Hospital as Fistula Surgeon or Obstetrician and Gynaecologist
Skills: Willingness to take up additional training for Doctors and Midwives.
Technical Skills: Fluency in English and Local Language(s)
Other Skills: Bamyan local or willingness to stay in Bamyan for a long time.
Willingness to do on call duties after closing hour.
Personal Characteristics: Flexible team worker.
