Job Description

  1. Summary of Job Description       
  • Provide individual counselling to pregnant women on danger signs of pregnancy, mother nutrition, preparedness for delivery, pregnancy care services including ante-natal care (ANC, treatment of infection and other basic problems during pregnancy
  • Perform Postnatal Care (PNC) and Neonatal Care (NNC) checkup and individual counseling services to postpartum women and their newborn.
  •  Provide key messages and individual counseling to mother and newborn/child care givers regarding maintaining personal hygiene and infection prevention measures at home.
  • Provide nutrition-specific counseling to mothers regarding her own and exclusive breast feeding for children 0-6 months and addition of supplementary food for children ages 6-24 months.
  • Provide professional counseling on family planning and family planning commodities/methods to all eligible clients and mothers based on individual/partner consent and agreement. 
  • Organize health education and clients’/community awareness sessions on key SRH problems and needs in the centers of if needed in the target communities.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the supervisor or line manager within the project scope of work.

Clarification Note: In principle, we have no provision for medicines, medical supplies and conducting deliveries in WFHS by assigned midwife according to the nature of the project, however she will be fully involved in individual counseling of clients, conducting awareness sessions and health education with main focus on RMNCH related issues.

  1. Scope of Work and Details of Assigned Tasks  
    1. Child-Bearing Age (CBA), Pregnancy and Antenatal Care Counseling
  • Organize health education and individual/community awareness sessions for child-bearing age women on the need for proper/good food, personal hygiene practices, health seeking needs etc.
  • Provide exclusive antenatal care counseling services (at least four time ANC visits) services for each pregnant women during the whole period of pregnancy according to national guideline.
  • Teach and share danger signs of pregnancy and needed remedial/referral services to each mother with more focus on last trimester.
  • Provide professional counseling services/advices to pregnant women and mother-in-laws (decision makers at home) about delivery plan and the need for safe/institutional delivery/giving birth at nearby health facility.
  • Safe/Institutional Delivery
  • Mothers, decision makers in families and home-based care givers will be given all required instructions, counseling and referral information as there will be NO DELIVERY facilities within the WFHS.
    1. Post-Partum/Natal Care Counseling
  • Provide individual counseling services to clients/mothers on very key issues on postnatal/postpartum mainly focusing on personal hygiene, infection prevention, possible PNC complications, need for regular follow up visits etc.
  • Advice mothers on exclusive breast feeding and the importance of colostrum for newborn.
  • Counseling all mothers on vaccination newborn and having all available antigens done as per recommended schedule/national EPI guidelines.  
  • Support the mothers to have access to required referral services within (like internal referral to available psychosocial/mental health support) and outside the WFHS (mainly to nearby public health facilities).
    1. Counselling for Pregnant & Lactating Mothers
  • Advice to mothers regarding their own nutritional needs and contextual recommendation for taking good/balanced food.
  • Sharing information with clients and target community regarding counselling on infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices
  • Encouraging pregnant and child-bearing age women mothers for their own and under five children immunization.
    1. Family Planning Counselling and Awareness
  • Provide individual (professional) counselling on modern contraceptive methods/commodities and traditional/natural approaches.
  • Organize awareness raising and health education sessions regarding birth-spacing for WFHS clients and local communities.
  • Guide family planning clients for needful support and referral services to public health facilities.

    1. Education and working experience
  • Graduated from a recognized midwifery program/institute holding MoPH approved certificate/positive exit exam result with at least two-year work experience in related field. Previous counseling and RMNCH/BPHS experience is desirable.

3.4. Languages Skills:

Fluency in spoken and written Dari and Pashtu is a requirement. English Language skills is a plus point.
