Job Description

There are a total of eight (8) positions, one position in each duty station: Bamyan, Gardez, Herat, Jalalabad, Kabul, Kandahar, Kunduz, and Mazar-e-Sharif.

Reporting Lines

The incumbent will work under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative (FAOR) in Afghanistan. S/he will work under the direct supervision of the Head of the Regional Office, who will be responsible for all day-to-day supervision and under the technical guidance of the Team Leader, Water Resource and Irrigation Team. The performance evaluation will be done by the Team Leader, Water Resource and Irrigation Team

Technical Focus

The Regional Agroforestry and Watershed Assistant will provide relevant technical assistance for the efficient implementation of Water and Resilience Services.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Coordinating all agroforestry and watershed implementation activities and crop water among the team members at the regional level.
  • He will be responsible for leading the selection team and doing the selection and verification of the agroforestry and watershed site, and related demonstration sites.
  • Assessment of the performance of the selected sites and preparation of need assessment/diagnostic reports for planned agroforestry, crop water, and watershed sites.
  • Assessment and proposing the most adoptive and climate resilience planta species for the selected agroforestry and watershed sites.
  • Evaluation of the water distribution system, discharge measurement (flumes, current meters, etc.), water loss calculation, water use efficiency, and crop water productivity at the farm level and in selected watershed sites.
  • Collection of Climatic data (Rainfall, humidity, wind speed, sunshine hours, etc.) from different stations in regions for technical design requirements.
  • Carry out agro-meteorological and hydrological data analysis for selected watershed sites and OFWM irrigation schemes.
  • Provision of recommendations for improvement of water management practices in watershed schemes.
  • Lead and supervise the IP staff, NGOs, and private sector’s agroforestry, crop water, and watershed management activities and provide them with required training, instructions, and guidance if needed.
  • Based on the emergency status of the project, the candidate may be required to travel or shift to other regions temporarily for any assigned tasks.
  • Having extensive knowledge of Crop Water Requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the line manager/supervisors.

Job Requirement

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements   

  • University degree (Bachelor’s) in Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Irrigation Engineering, Agriculture Engineering, or other related areas.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of professional experience in water resource, irrigation engineering, Agriculture, and Watershed Management/Bioengineering with UN and I/NGOs.
  • Working knowledge (level C) of English and the local languages (Pashto and/or Dari).
  • National of Afghanistan.

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Sound knowledge of Technical, Agriculture, social, and environmental data collection for Agroforestry and Watershed Management.
  • Having the skill of training the communities for the improvement of water management practices.
  • Knowing to assist the regional agroforestry, crop water, and watershed management team in the data collection and analysis of crop water requirements.
  • Having experience in keeping progress tracking of the agroforestry and watershed activities and reporting to the Supervisor.
  • A competent team player.
  • Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills and apply them in the working environment.
  • Must have worked in hardship areas.
  • Experience with the UN will be an added advantage.
  • Proficient in the use of standard office applications (e.g., Microsoft Office) and other productivity engineering tools.
