About MEDAIR: Medair is an international humanitarian organization established in 1988. Medair has been operating in Afghanistan since 1996 with programs mainly in the Health, Water & Sanitation, and Livelihoods sectors with significant reconstruction activities in remote areas. Current projects are Water & Sanitation, Food Security, & Disaster Risk Reduction. An Integrated Emergency Response: Medair aims to respond to high levels of food insecurity, malnutrition, and morbidity in Tirinkot district. The project intends to improve and extend WASH services including water supply infrastructure and hygiene practices to improve outcomes for vulnerable families. An Integrated Emergency Response: Medair aims to respond to high levels of food insecurity, malnutrition, and morbidity in Uruzgan, which has been significantly affected by drought and conflict conditions. Building upon Medair’s decades of experience in the Central Highlands and Kandahar, the project intends to improve and extend utilisation of lifesaving preventive and curative nutrition and health services by mothers, PLWs and children U5; to increase access to clean water, to reduce vulnerability to water-related and other preventable diseases, and to improve and increase food security for the most vulnerable families through food voucher distributions.

Job Description

Overall Purpose

To be a member of a Health & Nutrition team providing integrated health & nutrition services to targeted communities. The IMNCI Nurse will deliver appropriate treatment for children under 5 years following National IMNCI guideline.  The IMNCI Nurse will provide triage for severe illness and assist the Mobile clinics staff and to carry out screening for COVID-19. IMNCI Nurse will provide Outpatient consultation and treatment of most common causes of morbidity and mortality includes communicable diseases such as diarrheal and acute respiratory infections to the affected children. IMNCI Nurse will provide treatment for children under 5 according to IMNCI guidelines and other illnesses in line with National Standard Treatment Guidelines for the Primary Level of care in Afghanistan, 2013. The IMNCI Nurse will refer patients requiring further investigations. The IMNCI Nurse will provide required support or clinical supervision on Community-based Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (C-IMCI) provided by NEWs/CHWs. The IMNCI Nurse will conduct IMNCI consultations and provide treatment and counselling services on IMNCI to under 5 children. Under the supervision of the medical doctor and the support of the supervisor, the IMNCI Nurse will carry out exit interviews to review the quality-of-service delivery, correct diagnosis and treatment for morbidity and mortality according to international guidelines. The IMNCI Nurse will check vaccinations of U5 children and refer to appropriate health facilities for EPI services as required to increase the vaccination coverage

Project Overview

Medair is implementing an integrated IMAM, PHC (IMNCI, ANC, PNC & FP) and IYCF project in Daykundi Province. Medair’s Health and Nutrition project in Daykundi Province is designed to increase access to quality of life saving PHC and nutrition services for underserved communities, through integrated mobile health and nutrition teams (MHNT). This includes treatment of most common coexisting childhood illness, RH (ANC, PNC & FP) and treatment of malnutrition and other causes of morbidity and mortality, management of acute malnutrition in children under 5 years and pregnant and lactating women, increasing access to routine immunisations through referrals to the nearby health facility, treatment of communicable disease for children U5 and PSS. The programme also addresses some key determinants of ill health and malnutrition through promotion of improved Maternal Infant and Child Nutrition (MIYCN) practices and health and hygiene behaviours linked to unnecessary deaths amongst vulnerable populations. The programme also aims to reduce the transmission of COVID19 and reduce the impact of COVID19 on health and nutrition outcomes of women and children. Activities are focussed on addressing the key determinants of malnutrition and transmission of COVID19 through adequate access to Nutrition and psychosocial services, improved IYCF practised, health and psychosocial education and behaviour change activities. The Health and Nutrition Project will be implemented in Nawmish and Kiti Districts in Daykundi province.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical

  • Provide triage for severe illness and assist the Mobile clinics staff.
  • Provide Outpatient consultation and treatment of most common causes of morbidity and mortality including Communicable diseases such as diarrheal and acute respiratory infections to U5 childrenConduct history taking and perform physical examination of U5 sick children.
  • Provide proper diagnostic and treatment services based on the IMNCI guidelines.
  • Provide treatment for children under 5 according to IMNCI guidelines and other illnesses in line with National Standard Treatment Guidelines for Primary Level care in Afghanistan, 2013.
  • Refer under 5 children requiring further investigations and management to a nearby health facility.
  • Examine admitted children for any signs of co-existing illnesses and provide appropriate medical treatment or referral according to IMNCI guidelines.
  • Give appropriate health and hygiene education to the beneficiaries and care takers in individual and group sessions.
  • Check vaccinations status of U5 children and refer them for EPI services in nearby health facilities.
  • Provide required support or clinical supervision on Community-based Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (C-IMCI) provided by NEWs/CHWs
  • Carry out screening for COVID-19

 

Quality Management

Ensure adherence to the provided internal and external protocols and guidelines.

Ensure accurate record keeping of all nutrition activities, filling in forms, cards, registration books and tally sheets as required.

Compile reports as required and requested by Health and Nutrition supervisor.

Conduct on the Job training to Health assistant and Community Health Nutrition Workers (CHNWs)  based on need.

 

Logistics

  • Ensure safe storage of all supplies, medicines and medical material and equipment.
  • Ensure accurate record keeping of stock movements.
  • Assist the Health and Nutrition Supervisor in preparing stock requests
  • MAIN ACTIVITIES

    • To work as part of a mobile Health team covering multiple sites
    • Support all U5 children visiting for MHNT services.
    • Assess different signs and symptoms for patient’s diagnosis.
    • Prescribe the appropriate medication for the patient.
    • Determine if this is an initial or follow up visit for this problem.
    • Counsel the caretaker and provide them a necessary message especially on usage of medicine.
    • Facilitate the referral for complicated patients with official document for advance treatment to higher health centers. 
    • Record all necessary information in the existing reporting tools (registration book, vaccination cards of service beneficiary etc.)
    • Provide health and nutrition educations to the caregivers on breastfeeding (EBF), complementary feeding,
    • and hygiene, care of pregnant and lactating women, prevention of illness.
    • Update all reporting tools on daily basis.
    • Keep and maintain a good filing system for all documents.
    • Prepared the reports (Daily, Weekly, and monthly) according to the standard reporting tools.
    • Ensure safe storage and handling of the stock.
    • Assist line supervisor on performing other duties assigned by the organization.
    • Ensure accurate record keeping of all activities according to data collection templates.
    • Ensure safe storage and handling of the stock of medicines and equipment.
    • Perform any other duties not listed in the JD but requested by Line manager and Health supervisor

PERSON REQUIREMENTS

 

Educational Background 

  • Graduate /Diploma/Certificate of Nursing /Midwifery, or equivalent medical training and relevant post graduate experience

 

Relevant Eexperience

  • IMNCI/IMCI training
  • Immunization in Practice training
  • EmONC training and experience or equivalent
  • RMNCH training
  • At least 2-years` experience in IMNCI field/programming
  • MIYCN training
  • IYCF counselling experience
  • Experience in working in the remote areas with mobile team setup.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in the field of Nursing/Midwifery programs
  • Knowledge of intervention area is a plus.
  • Ability to manage working environment according to local culture.
  • Develops and promotes effective collaboration within and across units to achieve shared goals and optimize results.
  • Continuously seeks to learn, share knowledge, and innovate
