About Afghan Midwives Association: Afghan Midwives Association (AMA) The AMA is the technical body for midwifery education, professional development, and policies that enable every midwife in Afghanistan so midwives can practice the highest level of care for the mothers and newborns of the country. The AMA is a member of key national and international forums. For example, AMA is an active member of the Human Resource Development Task Force, the National Reproductive Health Task Force, The Maternal Newborn Health committee, the Afghan Women Network, and the Secretariat for National Nursing and Midwifery Steering Committee. Similarly, at the regional and international level, AMA is an active member of the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM), and White Ribbon Alliance (WRA) for safe motherhood and women empowerment; also a member of the Asia Midwifery Regional Resource Centre.
Job Description
The overall purpose of this position is to build the capacity and update the targeted FHH midwives’ knowledge and skills by taking on-the-job training for three visits. Mentors seek to strengthen midwifery practice and improve the quality of care by providing continuing education and technical support to less experienced midwives and improving their work environment.
Key Accountabilities
- Implement the assigned responsibilities under the direction of the project Manager and technical officer.
- Maintain strong partnerships with Provincial Health Director (Ph.D.), the Reproductive Health department (RH), and partner organizations to advocate for resource mobilization and support of midwives in their work area.
- Conduct regularly on-the-job mentoring to newly graduated midwives and midwives with poor skill at specific FHHs
- Develop an action plan for mentees, based on gap analysis
- Provide training through clinical consultation, assisting to problem-solve and helping them with direct patient care as needed.
- The clinical mentor will use guidance from mentorship tools and methodology during supervision.
- Promote and encourage mentees to provide services according to national standards and guidelines.
- Participate as a mentor of the mentorship program regional support visit team for the region(s) in which the clinical mentor is posted and for other regions if requested.
- The mentor will work with the advice of AMA on matters and /or perform services relating to the attached scope of work
- The mentor has agreed to provide high-quality services on the terms and conditions of mentorship project implementation.
- During the performance of mentorship services, a mentor can manage the FHHs visits date and time based on the mentorship activity plan, made by the project manager and technical officer.
- Documents/attendance sheet, tools, and report shall include the total number of days worked and a brief description of services provided for each visit.
- AMA desire to obtain services from the Mentor as more particularly described.
- Role model behavior and practices (e.g., Respectful Maternity Care)
- Participate in mentorship training and technical updates to ensure the knowledge, skills, and competencies are current and ensure competence in technical and mentoring skills.
- Data support, record keeping, and reporting
- Ensure adequate and organized record keeping of activities including mentoring plans, implementation progress, mentoring visits, completed tools, attendance sheet, and other related documents are recorded at the targeted FHHs.
- Share records with the AMA office after the completion of each visit. Write and submit timely reports as required including key issues, achievements, successes, challenges, and lessons learned with AMA office and provincial focal points.
- Follow up on the gaps in each visit to ensure the improvement of the findings.
- Regular coordination and communication with the provincial focal point and AMA project manager and technical officer.
- Participate in mentors’ Meetings.
- Attend RMNCAH committee meetings with a provincial focal point and provide the progress of mentorship in targeted Family Health houses based on need.

Job Requirement
- Graduated from the approved Afghanistan Midwifery Program recognized by the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) or Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE)
- Must be a committed member of AMA.
- At least 5 years of clinical experience in maternal, new-born health and family planning
- Update knowledge on QA, BEmoNC, and ETS.
- Strong clinical teaching experience
- Strong communication and team-building skills
- Fluency in local languages Dari and Pashto
- Proficient in clinical decision-making skills
- Ability to promote a positive work environment between relevant midwives and their workplace
- Ability to create positive change in knowledge, skills, behavior, and attitude of midwives in targeted FHHs during mentorship cycles.
- Able to mentor inexperienced mentees for one week per visit at each targeted Family Health House based on mentorship cycles.
- Having model professional behavior, attitude, and appearance consistent with international midwifery standards.
- Having a strong commitment to the midwifery profession
- Ability to work in a rural area
