About Company
About Dutch Committee for Afghanistan (DCA): DCA Background DCA has been present in Afghanistan since 1988, focusing its interventions to herders and pastoralists communities’ resilience and enabling them to achieve long-term, inclusive and equitable development. DCA is currently implementing several livestock development and humanitarian program in 15 Provinces of Afghanistan. In 2021, we were able to benefit more than 586,000 vulnerable Afghans in building their resilience. DCA’s mission is to reduce poverty and increase food security for the people of Afghanistan by protecting the livelihoods assets and building resilience. Our livelihoods approach sits at the nexus of humanitarian, development, and peacebuilding, and focuses on building resilience in a conflict-setting. DCA’s community driven approach is built upon four major pillars: food security and livelihoods improvement, extension, value chain development, and institutional capacities. Together, these four fields of activity constitute a powerful mix to drive our mission. Gender equality and one health (the interface between human, animal and environmental health stressing on new pandemics and epidemics such as COV-19) will continue to be our fundamental guiding principles. Project background: Agriculture and livestock activities directly impact 80% of the rural population and are the main driver of transformation and inclusive growth. However, feed shortage, limited animal health services and market failures have increased the price of imported livestock inputs over 50%, while livestock products including meat decreased by 20%. Hence, the key challenges remain three-fold: (i) in areas of high poverty, existing resilience measure require strengthening and the introduction of diversified coping mechanisms for safeguarding livelihoods; (ii) where commercial activity is viable in stimulating private sector development to create employment and generate income through diversified fragmented value chains and skills development; and (iii) to develop interventions that are inclusive and empower women, rural youth, minorities and the less-able in an environmentally sensitive manner. Based on the above, the overall objective of the project is to safeguard livelihoods and diversification of food intake by promoting opportunities for private sector development and enhance existing resilience mechanism of rural communities through livestock-focused innovations. The main objectives under this are (i) rural employment and income being safeguarded for local populations; and (ii) improved food security and food production practices. These will be aimed at transitioning rural communities from receiving humanitarian assistance towards self-sufficiency through private sector development for community-based employment and income-generating opportunities as well as economic activities and opportunities for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), with a focus on female-headed MSMEs. The approach also includes the cross-cutting issues of Gender equality and One Health Project Outcomes: Outcome One: Employment and income generation safeguarded for the rural population in the target provinces: Safeguarding economic activities for community-based employment, income generation and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Outcome Two: Livelihoods opportunities enhanced and food intake diversified: Enhance food security and enable sustainable food diversification, value addition in an environmentally inclusive manner.
