About CRS: CRS began direct operations in Afghanistan in early 2002. CRS maintains four main offices throughout the country: Kabul, Herat, Chaghcharan, and Bamiyan, with sub-offices in all of these provinces as well as Daikundi. The CRS strategic plan for Afghanistan focuses on poverty and risk reduction, human development, and emergency response in rural areas in western and central Afghanistan. CRS works to: Support people, from marginalized communities, gain basic education Support poor rural and peri-urban households to have increased livelihood security Support vulnerable communities to survive shocks without long-term negative impact on their livelihoods CRS’s livelihoods programs are clustered around two regions: The Central highlands (Bamiyan, Ghor, and Daikundi) and Herat. The core objective of the Livelihoods Program in Afghanistan is to improve livelihood security for poor rural and peri-urban households and addresses a range of issues related to livelihood security, including increased food security, resilience to drought and other natural disasters, improved agro-enterprise practices, access to clean water, and engaging women in income-generating opportunities.
Job Description
CRS is seeking a qualified Field Assistant (FA) in Adraskan district-Herat Province to implement day-to-day program activities that aims to enhance the resilience of vulnerable populations through a combination of trainings on improved practices for agricultural and livestock productivity, activities to assist farmers in establishing beneficial market connections, and the rehabilitation of water sources alongside hygiene promotion. He will be based in Herat Office and under the supervision of a Project Officer (PO), the FA will be expected to deliver of high-quality learning events on best water storage, treatment, and hygiene practices as well as improved agricultural production and marketing techniques. The FA will also establish and maintain relationships with beneficiary communities, work closely with Community Development Committees (CDCs)/Shuras, and support the FO to monitor project progress. Under guidance from the FO and the Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) Project Officer (PO), the FA will collect and document relevant project data and information for internal and external reporting purposes.
Roles and Key Responsibilities:
Support to Project Implementation
- Deliver high-quality community trainings on selected agriculture and hygiene promotion techniques
- Work closely with village Shura and community leaders to organize trainings and project activities
- Conduct frequent monitoring visits in target villages
- Record relevant information from monitoring activities (including information from field visits, pre- and post-test results from trainings, and any informal feedback from target communities
- Participate in staff trainings on new technical skills
Support to Project Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL)
- Collect project monitoring data including but not limited to farmer feedback sessions, observation forms, attendance sheets, and activity tracking
- Utilize multiple methods to collect quantitative and qualitative data
- Participate in project learning and reflection events
Teamwork and Relationships
- Develop and maintain positive relationships with project participants, community leaders, and other community members
Develop and maintain positive relationships with the project team and other CRS colleagues
Job Requirement
- Afghan national with a university Agronomy degree or five years experiences in Agriculture activities
- Minimum of 3 years related work experience with an INGO or government agency, ideally in the field of agriculture for an INGO.

Key Working Relationships:
Internal: Adraskan Field Assistant, Herat Livelihoods Program Manager (PM), SPO, MEAL Officer,
External: Project Participants, Community Leaders and other Community Members, Government Agencies, and other INGOs
Required Languages – Fluent Dari speaking and writing
Travel – The position will be based in Herat with frequent travel to Adraskan district project communities.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Proven skills in facilitating community trainings, community mobilization, conducting needs assessments, data collection, and writing activity reports of project activities
- Excellent Dari speaking, reading and writing skills
- Proactive, results-oriented and service-oriented
- Excellent communication and good judgment with regards to problem solving
- Strong sensitivity and respect for local cultures
- Professional manner in dealing with community members and co-workers.
- Strong listening and interpersonal skills
- Willingness to be based in Dawlatyar district and work in field locations, as assigned
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of agricultural livelihoods a plus
- Experience working in rural communities preferred
- Experience monitoring projects and collecting relevant data.
