Job Description

As a Histotechnologist you will be responsible for cutting, staining and preparing tissue samples for the pathologist to review. She/he is also responsible for prioritizing testing procedures and completing those procedures in an accurate and timely manner and maintaining proper accurate records of all tests done in accordance with established policies, procedures and regulations. Working under the direct supervision of the head of the department and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols. May need to deputize for Charge technologist in his absence.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Verifies by comparing of Labeling information with test requisition forms and patient details, ensuring the usage and quality of recommended container and means for specimen collection
  • Prepare specimen for further procedures based on the nature of investigation
  • Process specimens based on standard operating procedures (SOPs) and protocols
  • Making sure that no sample report is pending or delayed.
  • Use automated equipment and instruments including microscopes, microtomes and other lab equipment.
  • Receive specimen/tissues from procedures, operating room, diagnostic procedures and/or from autopsy.
  • Prepare tissue sections for immediate examination using rapid tissue processing and frozen section technique to freeze, cut, mount and stain tissue.
  • Assist in gross specimen examination.
  • Prepare for processing, embedding, trimming and cutting tissue specimens into blocks and fix tissue into fixing solution or formalin.
  • Prepare slides of specimens using specified stain to enhance visibility under microscope.
  • Examine slides under microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements.
  • Fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate with wax tissue specimens to be preserved for study by Histo-pathologist.
  • Prepare media, chemicals, reagents and solutions.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, including computerized documentation, in accordance with established policies, procedures and regulations.
  • Monitor and maintain quality control programs.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies, material and equipment.
  • Maintain and clean equipment and instruments as per established procedures and manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Responsible for performing tasks that are within the scope of his/her educational preparation, knowledge and permitted by the policies and procedures of HML, and other local, international guidelines; and the policies of the facility requesting the services.
  • Ensure the smooth functioning of all the equipment & availability of materials used in the laboratory.
  • Keeping his section working station clean and well-organized at all times
  • Keep abreast with the latest developments in laboratory medicine through CMEs
  • Responsible for the knowledge and practice of safety manual in the laboratory.
  • Creates, maintains and promotes safe and secure work practices.
  • Participates in laboratory trainings, capacity and quality improvement programs
  • Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed
  • Perform all other relevant duties and responsibilities assign by the supervisor

Job Requirement

EDUCATION:

  1. University degree in Medical Lab Technology,
  2. Documents attestation from MoHE, Afghanistan required

 

EXPERIENCE:

  1. Minimum 2 years of Clinical Laboratory experience
  2. Experience in Clinical Laboratory Management is an asset

 

LANGUAGE:

  1. Good Language proficiency in Dari and Pashto
  2. Proficiency in English is an asset

COMPUTER SKILLS:

  1. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Database

 

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

  1. Good written and verbal communication skills
  2. Ability to interact with a diverse range of individuals and organizations
